What is an LED wall?

An LED video screen or LED video wall is a video display that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs). These LEDs are fixed to modules and the modules are assembled in an LED panel called an "LED wall" or "LED cabinet". These cabinets are joined together to form an LED picture wall or screen.

What are the differences between an LED wall and a video projector?

The giant outdoor screen and the video projector are two devices that can be used to play a video image but the difference between them is the way that the image is reproduced; the result is incomparable in terms of luminosity, contrast and depth of colour. The video projector is very similar to a cinema projector: it sends a beam of light through a video image and then a lens, reproducing the image on a canvas or other light-coloured surface. (Very) low levels of lighting are required for good visibility.

The giant screen diffuses light through the thousands of tiny dots of colour that make up its surface. These points of light are very bright and even shine in bright sunshine, even more so when they are protected by visors comparable to miniature baseball caps above each horizontal line of dots of light. These points are called pixels and are created by SMD or DIP LEDs.

What size LED wall should I choose for my event?

In the case of screens in 4:3 or 16:9 format, it depends on the maximum distance of the audience.

The maximum distance of the audience compared to the recommended minimum surface area in m²:

  • 50 m back — 5 to 8 m² recommended
  • 75 m back — 11 to 15 m² recommended
  • 100 m back — 20 to 25 m² recommended
  • 150 m back — 35 to 45 m² recommended
  • 200 m back — 50 to 60 m² recommended
  • 250 m back — 70 to 80 m² recommended
  • 300 m back — 90 to 100 m² recommended
What's a pixel?

Pixel is often shortened to p or px. It is the base unit enabling the definition of a digital image represented by a matrix to be measured. Its name comes from the term "picture element".

What can be displayed on an LED wall?

You can display all kinds of video images, no matter what the format, even images produced by a computer. Really, it's a giant television. There is a wide array of image sources: you can display live TV; reproduce camera images; show a film, a slide show or a video montage; play a DVD or Blu-ray; show images from a video control room, etc.

LED video screens can be connected to a video processor, enabling them to accept practically all video signals and add scaler, PIP (Picture in Picture), remote control and freeze functions, etc. The giant screen itself does not have any constraints in terms of sources, but its dimension, format and resolution must be adapted.

What parameters are to be taken into account when installing and using an LED wall?

It is essential to prepare your event well by doing a technical recce on site in advance. The logistics will then have to be adapted. Here is an inexhaustive list of the points to check:

  • Transport of the giant screen to and from the event
  • Installation and disassembly
  • Video and electric cables (electric power distribution, power generator, etc.)
  • Operating staff
  • Master control
  • Camera relays
  • Supporting structure, hanging, maintenance devices
  • Etc.
Do I need an LED wall to show films in 16:9 format?

Showing videos on an LED screen:
To read videos on an LED screen, a video file will be loaded using the software of the LED screen (player) or a source connected to the video processor (AVI, MPEG format, etc.). The question is: my video is in 16:9 format — how can I show it correctly on my LED screen in terms of the aspect ratio?

Big screen and "letterbox" mode for LED screens:
a DVD or Blu-ray can be connected to an LED screen as a media source, but with an LED widescreen you will take greater pleasure in showing your film in XXL format. The DVD video supports multiple aspect ratios. A video stored on a DVD in 16:9 format is converted to a ratio of 4:3 (standard TV format). On panoramic LED screens the image is enlarged and converted by the LED screen to a 16:9 aspect ratio.

What does the term refresh rate mean in the case of an LED screen?

The refresh rate of an LED video wall is the number of times per second that the LED screen displays the source data. This is a different parameter from the frame rate.

What is the service life of your LED video walls?

The service life of our LED screen is more than 50,000 hours, but that depends on the use and maintenance of the screen. It is also important to remember that just as a lighting system is made up of a series of lights, screens are too and as a result, the luminosity of the LEDs will diminish naturally after 50,000 hours of use.

What does IP protection mean?

LED screens must be able to work 24/7 whilst withstanding sometimes extreme weather conditions (storms, sand, gales). As manufacturers, it is necessary for LED screens to meet the most demanding criteria. In plain English, the protection rating for outdoor LED screens would be IP54 and/or IP65, and for indoor screens IP20 would be the minimum protection rating.

But what do these criteria mean? And what does IP65 or IP20 correspond to?

The IP Code (or protection rating) is composed of the letters IP followed by two numbers and sometimes a letter.

As defined under the international standard IEC 60529, it classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures of LED display screens (cabinets or video walls).

The standard aims to provide users with more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as "waterproof". For example, in the case of IP 65, the first number indicates protection against dust. And 6 means dustproof, meaning that no dust can get in and it is completely protected from contact. The second number indicates protection against liquids. And 5 means that large quantities of water should not be able to get in if it rains hard.

How can I control my LED wall from a distance?

As a general rule, the signal cable of an LED digital panel is an RJ45, which is a standard network cable (category 5 minimum). With this type of cable, remote control can be achieved up to 100 m (although we do not recommend passing 80 m for safety reasons), which is enough for most customer requirements.

In the case of a fixed installation, an LED screen will be installed on a frame (often made to measure) that will have a dual use: setting up the screen on the wall (or street furniture) and enabling it to blend in with its surroundings, as well as housing a mini player (or mini server which we will call the source) and a transmitter card for controlling the LED screen. You've got it! The most economical way of controlling your LED screen is to use an RJ45 signal cable. But in certain special set-ups the mini player or transmitter card will not be able to be installed right next to the LED display (for example in the event that the control room needs to be moved a long way away like at concerts).

As a result, when the distance between the LED screen and LED control interface exceeds 80 m, the video signal transmission will use a different protocol. The optic fibre solution will therefore be adapted and the distance of the LED screen control from the transmitter card or computer will be able to reach up to 10 km, or even more. This solution has a higher cost, which should not be underestimated. In this case, as well as the wiring (single or multi-mode), it will be necessary to add a set of adapted RJ45 to fibre and fibre to RJ45 converters, which we can supply.

Connections between the distance, pixels and the viewing distance?

Depending on the environment in which it is operated, an LED screen can be used indoors, but other LED screens (or LED video walls) may be compatible for both indoor and outdoor use, and then others are exclusively for outdoor use (size of dot pitch and luminosity) — we can call this an open air screen.

What is the difference between the luminosity of an LED wall and its viewing angle?

On this subject, it is necessary to know that depending on the environment (indoor or outdoor) where an LED screen is installed, the luminosity required by an LED wall will be more or less important and different depending on the contrast ratio required for the chosen environment. There is a difference between indoor and outdoor LED screens in terms of the luminosity and viewing angle specifications.

Indoor LED screens require less luminosity, but a greater viewing angle. On the contrary, open air LED screens require more luminosity and a higher greyscale.

As a result, the viewing angles of LED screens operated in the open air are not as large as those of an indoor LED screen. If the viewing angle is reduced, the luminosity of the screen will be higher and vice versa. Furthermore, if the contrast ratio between the LED screen and the luminosity of the environment is greater, the LED wall display will be more colourful.

However, if the luminosity of the LED screen is too high, it will be detrimental and unpleasant to the human eye and the energy consumption will increase. Moreover, much more heat will be generated and the temperature of the electronics and LEDs will be much higher. The more the luminosity of the LEDs is reduced, the longer their shelf life will be prolonged and vice versa.

In conclusion, it is essential to adapt the settings of the LED wall, its luminosity and viewing angle depending on the environment and its use.
